7 clever ideas to make your small laundry room feel more spacious

By Katie Harris

It’s not how much laundry space you have that matters. It’s what you do with that space that counts.

If your laundry feels on the smaller side, don’t fret. We’ve put together some small laundry room ideas to help you create a laundry that feels spacious and organised.

1. Overhead cabinets

Install overhead cabinets above your washing machine to free up valuable benchspace and keep your laundry products organised and out of sight.

2. Sliding doors or curtains

If your laundry is open or visible from other parts of the house, consider using sliding doors or curtains to hide the area when you’re not washing clothes.

3. Install a rod to hang clothes on

If there’s room, install an overhead hanging rod to air-dry clothes or hang up any business shirts you don’t want to get crumpled. This eliminates the need for a separate drying rack and keeps the space looking uncluttered.

4. Find a home for your ironing board

Consider installing a fold-out ironing board that can be tucked away when not in use. Or try this this space-saving solution (pictured above), and hang your ironing board on the wall when you’re not using it.

5. Look for a stackable washing machine and dryer

Look for stackable or compact washing machine and dryer units specifically designed for small spaces. These appliances are typically narrower and shallower, allowing them to fit into tight corners.

6. Take advantage of vertical space

Install shelves above the washing machine and dryer and use up that vertical space. These shelves can be used to keep laundry supplies like, detergent, fabric softener, and other essentials organised and within easy reach.

7. Wall-mounted clothes line

A wall-mounted drying rack provides a handy spot to dry delicate items of clothing without taking up floor space. Fold it down when you need it and put it back up again when you don’t. (Here are some tips for installing a new clothesline.)
